Class Descriptions

Art

New to this year’s Performing Arts Camp is the Art Class! Students will get a chance to explore different techniques and materials such as clay, acrylic painting, pastels, etc., in a hands on, fun environment.

This class is taught by Puchi Noriega. Ms. Noriega is a professional artist whose work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions throughout the US, Canada, and Peru. With 30 years of teaching experience, Puchi has developed and implemented courses at the Ottawa School of Art, The Art Museum of Lima, the Art Institute of Miami, the Ceramic League of Miami, and has given workshops and lectures at Museums and Cultural Entities throughout North America. She currently teaches and works out of her own studio in Miami.

Choir

In the choir class, Mr. Rose brings together many years of experience teaching successful choirs in Miami-Dade Public Schools in order to develop a camp choir that amazes parents and guests alike. The camp choir is a unified body of all campers that performs various styles of music together with one unified voice. Vocal development and performance etiquette are keys to the choir’s success. This class is taught by Mr. Rose.

In the past, dance has been taught as an afterthought, or used as a tool to entertain campers during breaks. WECIAS takes a different approach to dance in our program by making it an integral part of the camp curriculum. At the WECIAS Performing Arts Camp, students will have the opportunity to learn numerous styles of dance including salsa, tap, line dance, and expressive movement. Many students choose to show-off their newly developed skills at the end-of-camp concert. This class is taught by junior staff.

Drama

During the drama class, skills will be taught through theater games and individual instruction. Developing a character, stage presence and basics of drama are taught in this highly motivating class. Instruction is overseen by Mrs. Martha Cabrerra, however, this year we are excited to announce that our camp will also have a guest instructor, Julie Danao-Salkin, who has performed on Broadway and across the world, to assist in teaching.

Music Theory

Music theory is a fundamental aspect of any musician’s education, and at the WECIAS performing arts camp, we find that giving students the opportunity to study music theory with piano is efficient, and fun for students!

Piano

Led by the talented Mr. Alan Caves, the piano class is one of the Performing Arts Camp’s more unique classes. Each student works at their own keyboard station, practicing their solo pieces while camp counselors monitor their progress and playing technique. The piano class inspires both experienced and novice piano students to reconnect with their musical passion. Often, parents are surprised by the student’s eagerness to continue practicing the piano after completing this course. This class is taught by Mr. Caves and junior staff.

Musical Theatre

In the past, the WECIAS Camp has performed:
Annie –
Seussical the Musical –
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory –
Into The Woods

In this class, campers are selected to be featured as leads, supporting cast, and ensemble members. Campers are trained to perform (using the skills taught in drama and chorus classes) and create an energetic production. Costumes, choreography and and basic sets are all utilized to enhance the performance.
This class is taught by Mr. Rose and Mr. Caves with the help of junior staff.

Games & Movie Day

Every day following lunch, our Junior Counselors lead campers in Group Time. During this time, counselors direct the students in fun games that build team-work skills and help students become more comfortable with each other and themselves. Game time helps bring the true star out of a shy camper.

This high energy class is unique in that it is led and instructed solely by Junior Counselors under the supervision of Mr. Rose, Mrs. Morrow, and Mr. Caves. Junior counselors also benefit as they learn responsibility through managing students and planning classes.

For a change in schedule, campers are typically treated to two movie days during camp, where all students ride a bus to he Falls Mall to see a movie, and return before lunch. Students are responsible for bringing their own lunch on movies day. The movie day schedule will be available at the beginning of camp.
